چکیده

We develop well-balanced finite-volume central schemes on overlapping cells for the SaintVenant shallow water system and its variants. The main challenge in deriving the schemes is related to the fact that the Saint-Venant system contains a geometric source term due to nonflat bottom topography and therefore a delicate balance between the flux gradients and source terms has to be preserved. We propose a constant subtraction technique, which helps one to ensure a well-balanced property of the schemes, while maintaining arbitrary high-order of accuracy. Hierarchical reconstruction limiting procedure is applied to eliminate spurious oscillations without using characteristic decomposition. Extensive oneand two-dimensional numerical simulations are conducted to verify the well-balanced property, high-order of accuracy, and non-oscillatory high-resolution for both smooth and nonsmooth solutions.

Central schemes for conservation laws with application to shallow water equations

An overview is given of finite volume central schemes for the numerical solution of systems of conservation and balance laws. Well balanced central schemes on staggered grid for the Saint-Venant model or river flow are considered. A scheme which is well balanced for channels with variable cross section is introduced. Finally, a scheme which preserves non static equilibria is introduced, and som...

A Second-order Well-balanced Positivity Preserving Central-upwind Scheme for the Saint-venant System

A family of Godunov-type central-upwind schemes for the Saint-Venant system of shallow water equations has been first introduced in [A. Kurganov and D. Levy, M2AN Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 36, 397-425, 2002]. Depending on the reconstruction step, the second-order versions of the schemes there could be made either well-balanced or positivity preserving, but fail to satisfy both properties simul...

Simulation and visualization of the Saint-Venant system using GPUs

We consider three high-resolution schemes for computing shallow-water waves as described by the Saint-Venant system and discuss how to develop highly efficient implementations using graphical processing units (GPUs). The schemes are well-balanced for lake-at-rest problems, handle dry states, and support linear friction models. The first two schemes handle dry states by switching variables in th...

Well-Balanced Positivity Preserving Central-Upwind Scheme on Triangular Grids for the Saint-Venant System

We introduce a new second-order central-upwind scheme for the Saint-Venant system of shallow water equations on triangular grids. We prove that the scheme both preserves stationary steady states (lake at rest) and guarantees the positivity of the computed fluid depth. Moreover, it can be applied to models with discontinuous bottom topography and irregular channel widths. We demonstrate these fe...

A Two-Dimensional Numerical Scheme of Dry/Wet Fronts for the Saint-Venant System of Shallow Water Equations

We propose a new two-dimensional numerical scheme to solve the Saint-Venant system of shallow water equations in the presence of partially flooded cells. Our method is well-balanced, positivity preserving, and handles dry states. The latter is ensured by using the draining time step technique in the time integration process, which guarantees non-negative water depths. Unlike previous schemes, o...
